Describe what the bird eats, not just what you offer

PawLine editorial · Published October 20, 2026

A food log should distinguish offered food from observed selection. A bowl containing several foods does not prove a balanced intake.

What to know

Merck discusses selective eating and nutritional problems in companion birds. It describes different recommendations for different groups of birds, so this worksheet deliberately does not prescribe one mixture for every species.

Record exact products, amounts offered if known, and what appears to be selected or left. Do not abruptly force a diet change or use a generic online ratio as treatment. Ask an avian veterinarian about a safe individualized plan and monitoring. Save the clinician's instructions alongside the food record.

Make the next step clear

  1. 1Keep food labels.
  2. 2Record selection and leftovers.
  3. 3Note changes over time.
  4. 4Ask the avian vet about the plan.
